While you can measure the basic parameters, you can't check for more advanced problems (like possible problems in the back of the eye – I'm not sure what the exact medical term in English is). You should check with an ophthalmologist at least once a year!

If you take measurements of your head in a mirror using a simple ruler, you can get everything an opthalmologist can give you in terms of dimensions, without wasting your money. Of course you still need a valid prescription beforehand. I just ordered a pair of glasses from glassesshop, they should get here soon. BTW. I also speak hungarian.
