@paul: I agree with the fact that people must be "nudged" in the right way, where I disagree are the details (ie. how much of a "nudge" they should get).

As far as Microsoft being greedy: I don't admire their business model or aspire to be part of such an enterprise. I've learned quite some time ago that even an order of magnitude increase in your income brings only a limited increase (and certainly not an order o magnitude increase) in your happiness.

@StrangeTheories: nu-i nici o problema. Personal prefer limba engleza (pentru ca intelege mai multe lume, plus ma descurc mai bine cu gramatica/ortografia). M-am abonat la blog-ul tau. Bafta la scoala!

Voi vorbi in romana… scuze daca asta e o problema.
1. Se vede ca nu ai cumparat un windows original… In cazul unui windows preinstalat, acesta vine cu un cd sau o partitie speciala de recuperare. Bagi cd-ul sau butezi partitia si face singur treaba. In cazul cumpararii separate, acesta vine cu un mic manual de instructiuni si chiar daca nu are, mai nou windows vista si windows 7 nu mai au nevoie mare de tastatura… se instaleaza ca si oricce alt program… mai grea e probabil setarea bios-ului dar din cate stiu si placile de baza/laptopurile au manuale.
2. Nu toti o fac… cei cu salarii mari isi permit sa dea banii pe astfel de lucruri.
3. Pirateria FACE cunoscut un produs al unei firme, insa asta nu inseamna ca ii aduce profit acestei firme. Pirateria nu se refera numai la cea software. Ce ai spus tu nu cred ca e valabil si in cazul filmelor si a muzicii.
4. Am vazut cateva persoane care isi cumparau chestii originale de placere. Unul din ei e programator si isi permitea.
5. Asta e adevarata… nu are rost sa comentez pe tema salariilor, insa o sa te contrazic in privinta faptuli ca angajatii Microsoft primesc gratuit produse. Cunosc un tip care era angajat al MS si umbla prin tara sa prinda dealeri din magazine gen DC, Ultra PRO etc. care faceau piraterie. Desi era angajat microsoft, platea pentru ce-si lua, singurul sau avantaj era ca le lua la pret redus. E si normal… le ia direct de la "producator"…

In MS's case I wonder how much of their revenue comes from the Windows cd's sold, compared to the crapload of money they get from OEM sales and corporate clients. Case in point – sharepoint: the amount of money they charge for licenses for site users can really add up for a large company.
It would be really easy to call them greedy and evil and all sorts of bad names. As much as I dislike what they stand for and using their products (I am more of a Google-whore as opposed to a MS-whore), I must admit they have a brilliant and successful business model. I wish I could start a business that was able to charge $150 for selling a product that costs a fraction to make (like Nike and MS) and still retain more than half the market share.
Moreover, people do not do the right thing unless prodded in that direction, when marginal cost of using the product becomes greater than the marginal benefit (the propensity of getting caught and fined / imprisoned is higher than the benefit you get from using windows/iexpl/office to surf the web/write homework).
