What bothers me:

• The blacklist approach – this means that there will be a lag before new attacks are detected
• Relying on third-party service (like the Google Safe Browsing API, McAfee SiteAdvisor, etc). While the Google Safe Browsing API has an explicit TOS stating that you can use it (under certain circumstances of course), the situation with McAfee and Symantec is not as clear-cut. Does Dasient have a contract with them or are they just scraping their websites? What if McAfee / Symantec decides that enough is enough and blocks them or even worse, sues them? Also, relying on these services means further delay in detecting the infected sites (because they must wait until these providers detect the infection)
• Their touted “dynamic filtering” technology seems to be over engineered for me. It also (as far as I understand) can’t handle situations like “the request is directed to a different machine” or “the machine is rootkitted and the malicious code is added on-the-fly”, both of these being situations which occurred in the real world (the first with CN CERT and the second with a bunch of compromised Linux machines)
• Also, I fear that because this filtering masks the problem (much like a WAF does), it will encourage people to be complacent about fixing the root of the problem (“so what if we get compromised twice a day due to weak passwords? we just click the checkbox!”)
• Finally, the prices seem a little steep to me (starting from ~10 USD a month and going over ~ 50 USD per month)

All in all it doesn’t seem to me to be worth 2M USD (which they claim to have in funding)…

But today I wanted to praise two widgets which IMHO get it right. I’m talking about Feedjit which shows the (approximate) physical location of your last N visitors and the Weather Sticker from Weather Underground. The things I like in them:

• Minimal fuss (no signup) required to get them.
• They are just an image! (Feedjit offers also a javascript version, but it is optional)
• Given that it is just an image, the browser can download it in parallel and doesn’t need to suspend the processing of the page.

I wish that all gadget providers would offer a lo-fi version of their gadgets. A+ to both of these services (and you can find them in my sidebar).

Recently I found a simpler (read: somebody else does the hosting for me :-)) solution to the problem thanks to the securitygarden blog: WorldTimeServer.

To get the clock, you have to do the following (it is a little non-intuitive, but bear with me):

• Go to their Current Local Times around the world page and select the location on the right you would like the clock to show. Your selection is saved in a cookie
• Now go back to the front page and select “Get free, cool and customizable analog clocks to embed on your web pages or blog site”. From here you can select if you would like a 12H or 24H clock and customize the colors.

While this solution is not as powerful as my original suggestion (one particular missing feature is that it doesn’t convert in-line dates as the original one did – but I didn’t use that feature as much as I originally imagined anyway), but it is much simpler (and doesn’t oblige me to keep up a PHP hosting service).

Below you can see the pipe, which is relatively simple:

The code consumes the result of the pipe as JSON and generates the flash object. It is adapted from the original include code. If you wish to use it, you should edit the Yahoo Pipes URL (replace it with your blog URL and the number of tags you wish to show), the text color (on the line with “tcolor”) and possibly the size of the flash. The weird method for constructing the links is necessary because Blogger seems to “muck” with the code otherwise.

Update: it seems that the Flash file can’t interpret tag names with special symbols in them (like ‘). Because of this I modified the pipe so that such tags are filtered out. This will result in some top tags not being displayed (if they contain special characters), but I considered this the right solution, because even if they were displayed, clicking on them wouldn’t result in anything. Credit goes to Evie for finding this issue.

Update: the S3 instance hosting the flash file and javascript (halotemplates.s3.amazonaws.com) went away (thanks to Soufiane for pointing this out). So I’ve downloaded the latest version of the WP-Cumulus and uploaded the SWF file from to Google Code. The SWFObject library is also served from there. So to everyone using the old version: please update to the latest code posted above to make it work again. Sorry for the disruption!

Update: The update broke the “clickability” of the links, since it seems that the new SWF file requires absolute URLs for that. This is now fixed in the script above.

Update: Yahoo pipes changed their backend and thus some adjustment was needed in the pipe which was done.

The response? Partially. The specifics are:

• I tested it with IE8, FF 3 and Opera 9. IE8 doesn’t appear to render the referenced HTML, while the two browsers do (I’m not sure if this is a security feature or a bug :-)).
• Neither of the two browsers (FF or Opera) seems to give access to the child from the parent, regardless if the child is loaded from the same domain or not
• Both browsers allow the child to access the parent (again, regardless if you include it from the same domain or not)

What does this mean for security?

• You can use this in situations where you can’t inject a script directly, but you can control the URL which is included in the object tag, which effectively is equivalent with an XSS attack. The scenario is less likely than having a direct XSS attack, but still feasible
• You can attack the embedded site by providing HTML elements in the parent which scripts in the child are looking for (for example, if you say “document.body” in the child, it will actually mean the body of the parent). Again, to exploit such a situation, you need to have fairly specific circumstances, but it is not impossible.

This again shows (as if it needs showing…) how complex web security is and how many features there are which can interact in various ways, making it hard to foresee all the possible combinations and their particular (security) implication.

So I give it up and embed directly the Blogger widget offered by Yahoo. I didn’t want to go this way for two reasons: I didn’t want my readers to have to load an other javascript. Also from a security stand point, it is better not to load Javascript / Flash from third party sources (not that I don’t trust Yahoo, but better safe than sorry).

PS. I checked out some alternative RSS manipulation services, but none of them could deliver HTML in a sinkable enough format. So until Yahoo offers HTML out or I figure out the mysteries of the Blogger RSS fetcher, I’m stuck with this solution.

Which overrides my favicon setting. The solution? Put your favicon declaration after the following line in your template:

• Easier to write. This means both speed (because I already spend quite a lot of time with different side-projects) and less formatting-cruft to add (so that I can concentrate on the actual content)
• Offer useful features to the readers (like syntax highlighting and line numbering for source code)
• Make the markup clean and semantic

Naturally I was interested when the Is HTML a Humane Markup Language? showed up in my feed reader, followed by Markdown, Oh the Humanity. However I find myself on the opposing side of the fence, agreeing with the points from the original Why Doesnt Wiki Do Html post. The most important rule is (and I’m paraphrasing here):

Blogs emphasis is on content, not presentation. Simple markup rules make people focus on expressing their ideas, not making them pretty.

Two main griefs I have with HTML as a markup language are:

• It needs a lot of typing. Just for this list I had to type:

  This is both inefficient, and makes you get out of the zone and slowing you down. Remember, we can’t multitask, just switch quickly between different tasks and the less we need to do that, the more efficient we are (and mind you, I’ve been using HTML since the days of Netscape 2.0, so it’s not that I’m not familiar with it)

• Sometimes a lot of code is needed to express concepts like syntax highlighted code. This code (generated automatically) does not lend itself to automatic transformations (for example what if I decide that I want to add/remove line numbering to all of my code samples?)

Currently I see two possible solutions to the problem:

Use a WYSIWYG editor. The problem with these are that they tend to produce horrendous markup, although lately they started to improve. Currently I’m toying around with Windows Live Writer but I don’t like certain aspects of it and I’m thinking about writing some plugins to make it behave the way I want to – if only I could make it run with Mono… Its main advantage is that, as a native (as opposed to web) application it can nicely interface with the filesystem and make things like uploading images easi(er).

As any problem in computer science, things can be solved by introducing an other layer of abstraction :-). That is some kind of markup language which codifies the concepts important to the user. This solves the problem of brevity (usually) and also makes it simple to change the styling (simply replace/tweak the code which translates it into HTML). The syntax offered by DokuWiki is quite good (although it has some inconsistencies), the MediaWiki syntax seems to cobbled together, a mix of pseudo-HTML and custom tags, and don’t even get me started about their table syntax :-|. But in general the approach is workable.

Finally, some words about WYSIWYG editors for wikis: they are really useful for initial adoption, but the usual approach to retrofit a full editor like TinyMCE suffers from the problem of not being extensible (this is especially important for software like DokuWiki where there are a lot of extensions which produce their own custom tags). One interesting approach which I found in the comments was the markItUp! editor. Aside from being based on my favorite JS library (jQuery), it has the advantage that it tries to speed up editing of the markup language, rather than trying to perform the complete HTML -> markup and back conversion. The approach is similar to the one employed by the XStandard editor (which I heard of via the excellent Boagworld podcast), whereby, rather than giving people the possibility to control directly the style of the text, they rather mark the type of content it represents, and the style sheet controls the actual way it is displayed.
